“Yang is a powerful player, with the accuracy of a surgeon and the heart of an artist.” —Naples News Critically acclaimed as “the most gifted young pianist of her generation” with a “million-volt stage presence,” pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences around the globe with her stunning virtuosity combined with heartfelt lyricism and sensitivity. In June 2005, Yang came to international attention when she became the Silver Medalist of the 12th Van Cliburn International Competition while being the youngest contestant. Since her spectacular finish, Yang has flourished into an “astonishing artist” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), giving groundbreaking debuts all across the world. In November of 2006, she made her celebrated New York Philharmonic debut with Lorin Maazel at Avery Fisher Hall. She has since appeared with them frequently, including the opening night of the Leonard Bernstein Festival in September 2008 at the special request of Maazel in his final season as music director. The New York Times called Yang’s rendition of Bernstein’s “Age of Anxiety” a “knock-out.” Yang has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra; the Hague Symphony Orchestra in the Netherlands; the Lexington and Naples Philharmonics; the Philadelphia Orchestra; the Chicago, Sarasota, Milwaukee, New Mexico, Baltimore, Colorado, Syracuse, Signature, Tucson, Duluth-Superior, Elgin, Danubia, Louisville, and Houston Symphonies; and many other renowned orchestras. This summer she made her San Francisco Symphony debut. Yang was born in Korea, where she received her first piano lesson at age four from her aunt, and currently resides in New York.
